Our mission
BNJC (Brighton & Hove Jewish Community), based at 29-31 New Church Road, Hove will include residential, educational, cultural, religious, social and coworking facilities. By building a brand new synagogue, exceptional kosher dining options and programming cultural events and classes, we aim to support Jewish life in Brighton, in all areas. Our aim is to put the exceptional seaside town of Brighton & Hove back on the Jewish map and to inspire the Jewish community from all walks of life to settle in Brighton & Hove.

Presentation of the BNJC team
Our goal is to employ 8 to 10 people at the BNJC. The food and crèche side of our operation will be outsourced and we will have strong support on Work Avenue’s co-working offer in London. The team will include programming and events, finance, coworking, marketing, site management (supported by an outsourced management agent).
About the role:
There are several Strategic Business Units (SBUs) that we will manage once the site is live:
- Food & Beveridge offer, which consists of:
- a. Restaurant Parev & Meat
- b. Kosher shop
- vs. Event catering
- D. Small dairy cafe
- e. Pastry shop
- Coworking offer
- Kindergarten
- Programming, Education and Events
- Gym
- Residential
- a. Rental properties
- b. Service charge monitoring (site management company name)
- On site there will also be the Brighton & Hove Hebrew Congregation (BHHC), which will operate a synagogue and a Mikveh (religious ritual bath). They have their own financial support and there will be opportunities to collaborate with this team.
Responsibilities include technical and commercial accounting:
• Cash and liquidity management
• Accounting records for BNJC and other entities we oversee
• Lead the annual audit on behalf of BNJC
• Budgeting process with the SBUs and preparation of the budget for the whole entity
• Strategic advice to SBUs
• Monthly budget variance analysis
• Tax planning
• Preparation of VAT declarations
• Risk Management – assist the CEO in creating and updating the risk register
• Supervise an accounting assistant on time
• At the beginning, monitor and record payments and receipts on all accounts
• Preparation of payments and transfers between accounts – catering and crèche should be managed by separate companies. The BNJC will oversee the banking/accounting operations for these.
• Resolve day-to-day payment and membership account queries for customers
• Preparation of monthly bank reconciliations on several bank accounts
• Reconciliation of nominal ledger accounts to balance sheet
• Assistance in the preparation of monthly and quarterly management reports
• Support in ad hoc projects
• General classification and organization
Experience, qualifications and skills
• ACA, ACCA or CIMA qualification
• At least 2 years of experience working within a finance department, ideally with leadership experience in budget process, tax planning, audit process
• The ability to produce very precise work and good attention to detail
• High level of numeracy
• Good communication and organizational skills
• The ability to work within a deadline
• Strong Microsoft and Excel skills

Remuneration / Contractual conditions
• Salary range of £35,000 to £45,000 depending on experience
• Permanent role
• 40 hour work week
